WHAT IT IS:
Stop & Jot from The Writing Revolution is a common quickwrite strategy for capturing current thinking.
HOW IT WORKS:
As students are engaging in any type of task (all subject areas), the teacher asks students to pause at a given point in their work or learning to briefly write about the ideas they are learning or know. This can just as easily be before a lesson (prior knowledge or retrieval practice), during a lesson (making connections, reflecting), or after a lesson (summarizing, reflecting, making connections).
The Teacher Toolkit suggests providing students with a space on papers assigned or another common structure (like a notebook for the class) where students will write when asked.
Consider providing a specific prompt or question to increase clarity or scaffold with sentence stems for younger students or new content/ideas.
