WHAT IT IS:
Expert Practice is the use of a deliberate and systematic practice approach to develop mastery of both skills and content knowledge.
HOW IT WORKS:
As a student-centered approach, Expert Practice is most effective when students are determining and driving the following steps:
- Break down complex skill or concepts into isolated parts, then identify a part that is more challenging.
- Practice that specific skill or concept with uninterrupted focus and quality effort (even for small chunks of time).
- Seek feedback on current progress and what still needs improvement.
This process can be repeated as often and in as large or small durations as desired. Depending on the nature of the skill or concept, students may need explicit direction in what quality practice/effort should look like.
