Especially for K-1 classrooms: From The Writing Strategies Book (Serravalo, 2017), Talk Like a Turtle is a phonetic spelling strategy for editing writing.
To help students check spelling, have them read their own writing aloud slowly–or talk like a turtle while they read. As they read words, think about how sounds are spelled and check their own spelling for accuracy.
This strategy can also be cooperative with partners which is helpful in identifying errors in spelling as well as clarity and meaning.

"I have been a teacher a long time. I wondered if the information in these lessons would be repetitive for me. That hasn't been the case. I know other teachers will appreciate strategies like these… small tweaks that can have a major impact in the classroom."
